According to Crisis Magazine's "Horizon" column for July of 1924, "Mrs. George G. Williams of Savannah Georgia has the distinction of being the first colored woman to be appointed to the National Committee of the Republican Party." This medal was worn at the 1932 Republican Convention in Chicago, where the party nominated then-President Herbert Hoover. Hoover lost to Democrat Franklin Delano Roosevelt, who served three terms through the Great Depression and World War II.
